Which follows is the tradition of the Indian Ayurvedic systems. Over 5000 years ago great sage sri sri. Pathamjali modified the systems which resulted in a system of massage and energy points (Pressure Points) in the body. But the current system has the influence of the great sage sri, Agasthymuni (the author of sidha vaidyam) as he said in his sidha vaidyam. Ayurveda was founded by the great lord sri sri, Dhanwam Dhari it because it was very difficult to understand as it was written in secret codes and poems.

Later Padanjali modified then the number of persons who can understand the poems and explanations became numerous. But Ayurvedic massage was mostly related to the Indian martial arts Kalari. So it was not widely known but the people who where following Kalari were keeping well up to the present time. Only 300 years ago Ayurvedic massage got known to the public. The Ayurveda consisted only of medicines, treatments (Panchakarma etc.) and surgery. The Great Physician Sri. CHARAKA, who is a product of Nalamda university in ancient times, never recom-

It is still a mystery how the massage got the wonderful influence in Ayurvedic treatments.
But the Kerala Ayurvedic tradition got a significant influenced of massage 800 years ago. In my opinion, probably in the time of Kowdilya, a great physician who learned the Arabic methods of treatment and he also recommended the massage to Ayurveda. In a way it developed together with Panchakarma but the latter has still no connection with massage as such but uses massage preliminary work of Panchakarma to make the patient more receptive for the medicines

Massage has a good relation with other types of Ayurvedic branches like Nadichikilsa, sapthanadi etc…
Panchakarma consist of Vamanam (vomiting), Vasty (enema), Nasyam (treatment through nose), Moksham (also called Raktha moksham – the leach therapy) and Swedanam (steaming method). The ancient practitioner may get good result from panchakarma when the massage is used preliminary. According to Ayurveda strictly massage has no relation with panchakarma. |

Nowadays there are some methods used like Uzhichil (the foot massage), Thirummu(the normal massage), Kalari thirummu (the massage used in Kerala Martial arts), Marma thirummu (massage with Marmma-the pressure points) and Kadhakali thirummu (the hard massage which used to massage the Kadhakali students).
There are two type of Kalari thirummu: Maivzhakkam (Kachathirumu) applied for body flexibility and most of the time done with the feet and Maruthirummu / muttu thitummu, the treatment for those who are injured in war or Kalari practice etc... (massage only by hand).
